The Technology
BBL uses the power of intense pulsed light (IPL) to provide optimal results in skin rejuvenation. If you have sun damage, visible facial veins and/or uneven pigmentation, Sciton BBL™ skin rejuvenation may be right for you.
BBL is a type of light technology. However, BBL is a more advanced and powerful type. BBL hand pieces are equipped with state-of-the-art cooling features, enabling the comfortable and safe delivery of high-powered energy.
BBL works by delivering broad-spectrum light to the skin. The energy is absorbed by the brown pigment (melanin) and the hemoglobin in blood vessels that contributes to redness, and the pigment and hemoglobin are eliminated.
The heat from the light energy also helps stimulate collagen production, thereby smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles.

Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of procedure performed. We will discuss all of your options with you.
The procedure is gentle, noninvasive, and safe. Generally, there is no need for a topical anesthetic, however, the physician may choose to use it on more sensitive areas.
The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient and we will personalise a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire. We may also combine your treatment with other popular aesthetic procedures to further personalise your treatment.
The treatments are very quick, safe and highly effective with minimal downtime. In contrast to other technology (i.e. IPL) fewer treatments are required (2-3 compared with 5-6). The treatments are much less painful due to the physics of the machine as well as the sapphire cooling plate that cools the skin while the treatments are performed. This not only minimises discomfort but also allows higher energies to be used and therefore greater results. The cooling mechanism combined with the variable pulse width and energy means we can also customise the treatments to suit and treat all skin types. Other technology does not allow as much variability in the settings of the machines and therefore are not necessarily suited to treating a wide variety of skin types.
The treatment initially involves applying an anesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 minutes. The actual treatment lasts anywhere between 10 -20 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated (ten minutes for a face, 15-20 for face neck and chest). After the treatment the skin feels a little warm and ice packs are applied for 15-20 minutes. The warm feeling is usually gone after 30 minutes. At this point the skin is a little red, the majority if the redness is gone by the next day. Makeup can be worn straight away. The brown spots and pigmentation go darker and gradually fade out of the skin over a week.
There is no breaking or peeling of the skin. Treatments are performed 3-4 weeks apart.

FAQs
The sensation is described as a hot rubber band flicking on the skin. Whilst everyone's skin and treatment response is different, most clients enjoy a comfortable treatment experience.
Temporary redness, swelling, heat within the skin and itching can occur immediately after treatment. Any symptoms usually subside within one hour post treatment. Any pigmentation and freckling within the treated area will begin to flake off the skin in the days following your treatment. After care instructions will be provided to you on the day of your appointment.
An active tan from the sun or tanning beds is not appropriate for treating with BBL. Tanned skin has a lot of pigment or melanin that may also absorb the BBL light energy. It is recommended that a person does not have sun exposure in the area to be treated for a period of 3 weeks prior to treatment with BBL. Self tanners must be faded from the skin for at least a week to 10 days prior to treatment. Discuss with your clinician the possibility of tanning during your series so that a safe regimen can be created.

You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. Pigmented lesions will darken and gradually flake off and fade over the next 7-10 days. Often your treated skin will feel smoother, fine lines and pores begin to be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will fade. Results depend on your skin’s condition, the number of treatments, and the area treated. Your clinician will provide you with complete information about the post treatment care and results.
