PIGMENTATION & FRECKLES TREATMENT SYDNEY

One of the most common skin blemishes we treat in our clinic is hyper-pigmentation or dark spots on the face and body. These spots are typically the result of picked acne or other scars which have been exposed to the sun. Sun exposure causes our body to increase melanin (tanning cell) production.

Sometimes hormone changes will also incur excess pigment (Melasma; also known as mask of pregnancy). Other spots include general skin ageing such as Liver Spots, likely to occur particularly over the age of 40.

Pigmentation Treatments

Melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells, produce and dispose of melanin abnormally, resulting in excessive skin pigmentation. Skin colour is determined by melanocytes, while melanin naturally protects the skin by absorbing ultraviolet rays. Melanin is produced as a result of sun exposure or UV radiation. Excessive skin pigmentation, caused by uneven pigmentation, is also one of the first signs of ageing, alongside sun damage and UV radiation. Light-based skin pigmentation treatment in Sydney helps to clear damaged pigmented lesions by targeting melanin.

Our treatments are suitable for anyone with freckles, dark spots or patches of pigmentation on their face or body. This largely depends on any existing skin conditions or concerns that may affect the treatments. In order to remove freckles or age spots without affecting surrounding tissue, we use medical grade peels and lasers. Despite the variant nature of people's skin, our methods are safe for both men and women.

Pigmentation
There are several main factors that affect skin pigmentation, including the sun, ageing, and genetics. As early as age 30, they can disrupt the process that produces and distributes melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its colour. Thus, melanin accumulates on the surface of the epidermis and is unevenly distributed in the skin. As a result, skin pigmentation becomes uneven and dark spots appear. There are a variety of reasons why this may occur:

- Lentigo, is also called age spots if it is mainly due to the intrinsic ageing of the skin, or solar lentigo if it is caused by regular and considerable sun exposure.
- Liver spots, also called ephelides.
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation, such as that resulting from acne. Melanin is produced in excess by inflammation thus causing the mark. They can be unsightly even though they are completely harmless.

THE CONSULTATION

During a consultation our teams will create a custom program of in-clinic Treatments and Home Care tailored to your specific needs.

Treatment Options include IPL, PicoSure, BBL and medical skin peels. As essential is our treatment programs are home care when treating pigmentation as exposure to the sun results in pigment re-occurring once treated. Our Ultra Brightening Serum not only reduces existing pigment, but also prevents new pigment from forming.

We also recommend Dermaquest Anti Ageing tinted SPF or Dermaquest Daily Moisturising Lotion as a crucial step in your home routine.

IPL

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a treatment option that can help to diminish the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots on your skin. Using wavelengths of heated light, the pigmentation is broken down and the body naturally disposes of it. In addition, natural collagen production is encouraged to regenerate youthful and clear skin.

This treatment only lasts around 30 minutes and a topic gel may be applied to the skin for the comfort of the patient. IPL using innovative technology to target pigmentation without damaging surrounding skin.

There is minimal downtime after IPL. The skin can appear slightly red and feel tender right after treatment, but this will subside within 48 hours of treatment.

PICOSURE FOR PIGMENTATION

PicoSure Laser treatment is an advanced procedure that can be used to target pigmentation and trigger the body’s natural healing process. It is a fast and simple treatment and there is no need for any topic anaesthetic to be used. Patients describe this treatment as a comfortable procedure and each session lasts around one hour.

There is no downtime associated with Picosure Laser treatment. While the skin can appeal slightly red after the procedure, this will subside on its own and within 48 hours of the treatment. Patients will notice a significant different in their skin and visible pigmentation will be diminished.

BBL

BroadBand Light treatment is able to improve the appearance of your skin and diminish areas of pigmentation using high-intensity light. It will heat the upper layers of your skin to absorb the pigmentation and natural collagen process is encouraged. This will rejuvenate your skin and diminish the appearance of pigmentation.

For the procedure, a numbing cream may be used for patient comfort. But, this treatment is generally well tolerated by patients. BBL can be used on the face, neck and chest. After treatment, it is normal for the skin to be slightly red and it may feel like you have sunburn. However, this should subside within a few hours of treatment.

MEDICAL SKIN PEELS

Chemical skin peels is a non-invasive treatment that can be used to rejuvenate the appearance of your skin. This works by exfoliating the dead skin away and stimulating natural collagen production to diminish the appearance of pigmentation. There are different intensity of chemical peels and a professional will be able to advise you on what one is best for your skin.
